Network TCO: Why the Cheapest Switch Is Rarely the Cheapest Network
Purchase price is the easiest number to compare, so it often decides the order. Yet over five years the hardware price is usually only part of what a network really costs. Total cost of ownership (TCO) looks at the whole picture: buying, running, fixing and growing the network.
The six parts of network TCO
| Cost | What to include |
|---|---|
| 1. Purchase | Switches, APs, optics, power supplies, accessories |
| 2. Licences and subscriptions | Management, controller, feature and support licences, often yearly |
| 3. Installation | Engineering time, configuration, commissioning |
| 4. Operation | Power consumption, cooling, monitoring, staff time |
| 5. Failures and downtime | Spare parts, RMA shipping, lost business while waiting |
| 6. Growth | Adding ports, speeds and sites without redesign |
Where hidden costs appear
- Licences: some platforms charge yearly for management, cloud controllers or even for PoE and advanced features. Over five years this can exceed the hardware price.
- Lead time: a project that waits six weeks for switches pays for idle installers, penalties and delayed revenue.
- Warranty logistics: if a failed unit must be shipped abroad, the site may run without it for weeks. A spare from local stock fixes the problem in a day.
- Wrong sizing: a switch with too small a PoE budget or a slow uplink is replaced early.
- Grey imports: units bought outside the official channel may have no local warranty at all.
A simple five-year TCO formula
TCO = purchase + (yearly licences × 5) + installation + (yearly power × 5) + expected downtime cost + spares
Compare suppliers with the same formula. Ask each one in writing about licences, warranty period, replacement time and local stock.
How to lower TCO without lowering quality
- Specify requirements, not brands, so more qualified suppliers can bid.
- Use premium platforms only where their features are truly needed, typically the data-centre core.
- Standardise access, PoE, Wi-Fi, CCTV and voice on one supplier to simplify spares and support.
- Choose a supplier with stock and RMA in your region.
- Size PoE and uplinks with headroom for five years of growth.
How Navijin helps
Navijin was built around low TCO for the access and edge of the network: project pricing, local stock in Dubai, Baku and Tripoli, warranty handled locally by Navas, and one brand for switching, wireless, CCTV and voice. Read the Market Guide 2026 or ask for a TCO comparison for your project.
