How Many Wi-Fi Access Points Do I Need? A Simple Sizing Guide
Too few access points means dead zones and slow Wi-Fi; too many means wasted budget and interference. The right number depends on two things: the area you need to cover and the number of people using Wi-Fi at the same time. Here is a simple way to estimate it before a professional site survey.
Step 1: Size for coverage
Walls, glass, metal and floor layout change Wi-Fi range a lot. Use these typical indoor coverage values per access point as a starting point:
| Environment | Typical area per AP |
|---|---|
| Open-plan office, showroom | 120–180 m² |
| Office with many walls | 80–120 m² |
| Hotel rooms (concrete walls) | 1 AP per 2–4 rooms |
| Classrooms | 1 AP per classroom |
| Warehouse (high ceilings) | 300–500 m², depending on racks |
Step 2: Size for capacity
In busy areas, the number of active users matters more than area. For a good experience, plan roughly:
- Wi-Fi 6: about 30–50 active users per access point
- Wi-Fi 7: about 50–80 active users per access point (Navijin Wi-Fi 7 APs support 350+ connected users, but active streaming users need more airtime)
- Video calls and streaming need more airtime than browsing and messaging
Example: a conference hall with 400 guests, of whom about 60% are active at once, has 240 active users. With Wi-Fi 7 at about 60 active users per AP you need around 4–5 access points, even if one AP could cover the room's area.
Step 3: Take the larger number
Calculate the number of APs for coverage and for capacity, and use the higher result. Then add outdoor access points for terraces, pools, parking and courtyards.
Step 4: Do not forget the wired side
- One PoE+ switch port per access point (Wi-Fi 6/7 APs usually need PoE+)
- 2.5G ports or uplinks for Wi-Fi 7 access points
- A gateway or AC controller to manage all APs, SSIDs and guest access centrally

These rules give a good first estimate, but a site survey gives the exact number and positions. Navijin engineers can review your floor plans and recommend the right mix of Wi-Fi 6 and Wi-Fi 7 access points. See our Hotel, Conference & Event Venues and Wi-Fi 7 solutions, or send us your floor plan.
